An Invitation to Read: "Teach us to Pray"

The disciples approached Jesus once and asked Him to teach them to pray. The Gospel of Luke includes their reasoning - John had taught his disciples to pray so Jesus should teach them. Obviously they had witnessed the time Jesus spent in prayer and the importance it played in His ministry and in who He was.

Jesus responded to their request with what has become known as The Lord’s Prayer. Since then it has been repeated, memorized, inscribed and sung. It is a bedrock among Christian beliefs. But the words were not intended as a replacement for personal prayer, to be spoken in choral reverence. Jesus was teaching His disciples how to pray and to do this, He provided them with a model which incorporated the important elements to be included in daily conversation with God. It is important, not in the beauty of the words, but in the utility of their function.

Join us in the next weeks as we look to the “Disciples’ Prayer” to help us as we form our words of communication with Almighty God.
