Recently, my son was in the hospital at Emory St. Joseph in Atlanta. As anyone who has had a family member in the hospital understands, I had time to wander the halls of the facility. If you are familiar with St. Joseph's, you know that it is very unique. In the quiet of night and early morning, I found comfort in the written prayers and statuary located throughout the hospital, a testament to the faith of its founders.
One section that really interested me was a small room dedicated to the Stations of the Cross, mirroring the steps leading to Golgotha, from condemnation to execution. The exhibit ended with the body of Christ being removed from the cross and laid in the tomb….Jesus punished for His ministry on Earth. The depiction was powerful.
But missing in the room was the joy of the victory of resurrection. Where was the promise of eternity? Shouldn’t it have been a part of this story of sacrifice, the giving of one life for the salvation of many? Where was the assurance that the Light still shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot extinguish it? Truth, not celebrated within walls of ivory and gold, but carved on the sides of the tomb: "He is not here, He is risen!" It is by Jesus that the path of redemption was marked, life is promised, victory is assured.
And so, we present our own stations—not just of the Via Dolorosa but of the grave that could not hold Him, a testament to the story of victory. Join us in the next weeks as we prepare for the celebration of Resurrection, "The Path to Redemption."
