“The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
While I was digging deeper into the meaning of this prayer, I saw the depth of love that God has for his children. The word “bless” in Hebrew is barakh which means provision
or provide. The word “keep” in Hebrew is shamar which means to guard or protect. It
gives me peace knowing that God blesses me with his provision and protection. “Make
his face shine upon you” is showing us God’s favor in our lives. God speaks over us his
grace, peace and goodness each and every day. God gives us his grace freely. He
doesn’t keep a record of our failures or successes to determine who receives his grace
and love. It is the sovereignty of God and his will that allows us to be granted his love,
grace, mercy and salvation.
“May God be gracious to you and bless you and make his face shine upon you” Psalm 67:1
This blessing is a gift of love, spoken directly from the heart of God. To think sinners like
us, who make mistakes every day, are so adored and loved by our Father. God the
creator of everything. The one who forgives us and shows us mercy when we do not
deserve it. The God who knows us by name and wants us to be near to him. This prayer
is showing us God’s desire for the goodness in the lives of his children.
God spoke these words to Moses and instructed him to tell Aaron and his sons (priests) that this was the way they were to bless the children of Israel. As a child growing up in the church, our Pastor would say this blessing at the end of every service. Our pastor
was calling upon God’s blessing of provision and protection over those who believe in
him and follow him.
This prayer continues to be in my heart as I walk with the Lord. As you continue your journey with Christ, I pray this for you as well,
“May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it, and may you be filled with the fullness of life and power the comes from God.”
Ephesians 3:16
