But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
1 John 1:7 NIV
Science does not have an exact determination of what light is, and the definition has changed over time.
Light – Electromagnetic radiation or energy that propagates as waves or oscillating photons through empty space at approximately 300,000 kilometers per second. Light is the primary way energy is transferred in the universe.
But the Bible tells us that God is light (1 John 1:5) and that He never changes (Malachi 3:6). Our human minds (or science) can’t fully comprehend all that God is. On the first day of creation God said let there be light and He saw that the light was good. This was before the sun, moon and stars were created on the 4th day. From the very beginning there was Light.
John tells us to walk in the light. The Greek word for walk is in the present tense which indicates a continual or habitual living in the light. David wrote, “your word is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105.) Living in the light is living in His Word.
The world needs light. The human eye cannot see without light. In order to see an object, light rays must reflect off the object. The reflecting of light is what gives our world color.
What we see as white light is actually a mixture of multiple colors. The sun’s light/rays appear white. But when the sun’s rays hit water in the air, the droplets of water split the light into its colors that we call a rainbow. When we see color in flowers or anything, it is because what we are looking at is reflecting a specific color from light. A red rose for example reflects the red in the light and absorbs all the other colors. Green grass is reflecting the green in the light and absorbing all the other colors. An object will appear black when it reflects no light.
If we are following Christ, His light is in us. We should reflect His light to other through our actions. We may reflect different “colors” at different times (love, joy, peace, patience etc., or different talents) but it is all God’s light. Like a sunset when the light scatters due to different wave lengths, we can all reflect a different color. God made us all different and unique. But this does not mean that we can’t get along with each other if we are not all alike. If we are walking in the Light, we have fellowship with each other.
In verse 6, John tell us that if we walk in the darkness, we lie and do not have fellowship with God. We are not reflecting any of God’s Light. But in verse 7, he tells us that if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we will also have fellowship with one another. Not only do we walk with God, but we also walk with each other (fellowship).
Satan is trying to create a divide between people and destroy fellowship. But if we walk in God’s light, the darkness of satan will disappear. In God there is no darkness. All the verbs in verse 7 are present tense or mean continual. When sin or darkness is present, if we are walking in the light, the blood of Jesus is cleansing us from our sins. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (Matt 5:15) So let us continually walk in His light so that we can have fellowship with each other and let His light and beautiful colors shine through us to bring others to Him.
