"Glory to God in the highest! And on earth, Peace, goodwill to men.”

Luke 2:14

To the Magi, revelation came through the study of ancient manuscripts and prophecies. To Mary, a personal angelic visitation explained her role in the coming of the Messiah. But to the shepherds, the announcement of the birth of Jesus came with fanfare and amazement. Angel messengers, heavenly hosts, sang with  praise to God, giving an invitation to the shepherds to greet the Holy One in His manger bed. They even received a sign to guarantee that they were not confused or misled: "You will find the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." In praise to God, they sang, "Peace on Earth, goodwill to men."

The absence of peace wrecks the headlines of the present and echoes painfully from the past. From Palestine to Ukraine to the conflicts in Africa—even from the streets of our own country comes the cry for peace. And yet it cannot be found in the strength of arms or clever statesmanship. It is elusive to the mind that looks for it in the leadership of man, for it is the province of God. It is He who brings calm to the upheavals of human passion for power and greed. It was the Son of God who spoke to the storm: "Peace, be still." And it was to the common shepherd that God sent the choirs of angels with the heavenly message: "Peace on earth, goodwill to men."

Peace is more than freedom from aggression. The mind of man can be easily confused by empty phrases and shows of power.

Jesus explained that the absence of conflict is the peace that “the world gives.” Real peace is a gift from God which guards our hearts and focuses us on Him. “My peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives.” (John 14:27)

The shepherds' story should bring encouragement to those of us who live far from the revelation of the manger and the promise it held. The shepherds would never have figured in the expectations of the religious hierarchy of that time as they awaited the arrival of the Messiah. And yet, to these common men came the words of promise: "You will find the Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." They were the witnesses to the message of the heavenly host as they sang in praise to God - Peace on earth, Good will to men. They worshipped the Prince of Peace.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you. And give you peace.

(Numbers 24-26)
