Living for the Kingdom

Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10

If we have truly accepted who God is; Almighty God, Most High God, Lord and Master, Everlasting, etc., then we should crave being more fully in His kingdom. The Greek word

used for "come" is a command calling for sudden instantaneous coming. Jesus recognizes the urgent need for God’s Kingdom here on earth. Jesus had told the people in Matt 5:3 “repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Luke 17:21 says, "For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you." But what is the kingdom?

The Greek words used in the New Testament for "kingdom" all allude to the divine spiritual

kingdom and the reign of the Messiah. Matthew wrote to Jewish Christians showing that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophesies and was Israel’s Messiah who would establish the promised kingdom. Some scholars point out that since it was written to a Jewish audience, Matthew avoids using Kingdom of God because Jews would not say God’s name because it was so holy. Matthew usually uses Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus goes on to tell them, as recorded in later chapters in Matthew, what the Kingdom is like. In each parable, the Kingdom is something good and desirable.

"The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom." Matt 13:24

The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.

Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and

becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches. Matt 13:31-32

The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough. Matt 13:33

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. Matt 13:44

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. Matt 13:45-46

Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all

kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. Matt 13:47-48

The Kingdom may seem small or insignificant, but it is growing, and it is worth everything we have. Eventually, the Kingdom will have only good people in it.

Matt 6:33 says to “seek first the kingdom of heaven.” This means to put God first in every aspect of your life. We, as Americans, don’t really understand a kingdom ruled by a King and subject to that king. We are used to a republic where we elect people to represent the wishes of the people, and if they don’t do what we want, we vote them out. Unlike our elected officials, God is all-knowing, perfect, and love. He truly knows what is best for us, and He can be trusted even if we think we need something different.

Jesus saw how corrupt the world was and knows how much better God’s Kingdom is. So He taught the disciples and us to pray for God’s Kingdom to come. But in order for us to live in God’s Kingdom, we have to submit to His will. Contrary to what we are taught today, it is not about us. Before we can pray, “Thy kingdom come”, we must be willing to pray, “My kingdom go”. (Alan Redpath)

We don’t have perfect knowledge, and we fall short of loving like God does. Jesus gave of his

time and energy to feed and heal people who only wanted to be with Him for what He could do for them. They eventually killed Him because He did not set up His kingdom the way they thought He should.

We need to think and believe as the Psalmist did.

How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 84:1-2

We are currently living with “weeds” and “bad fish,” but one day, Jesus will return.

The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign forever and ever.” Revelation 11:15

And so we pray - Your Kingdom Come!!!
