“I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way!" Psalm 139:14
“I Praise You Lord with the Hands You Made” by The Donut Man is a song that is played through the speakers in our house at least once a day. My littles love it and they both join in on the prompts to sing, clap and jump. If you grew up in a Christian home, I'm sure as soon as you read the title of this blog, your brain immediately jumped to the verse we, especially as women, all know so well - I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Growing up, I loved this verse. It reminded me I was beautiful and was made wonderfully and intentionally. As I have matured both physically and spiritually I have learned the importance of getting the full picture of this scripture by looking at all the context. Being beautiful and wonderful will leave you unsatisfied. Psalm 139 is so much more than David speaking of how wonderfully God made us. Psalm 139 is personal and intimate. David’s prayer takes the reader through all the “omnis” of our Lord in relationship with us.
You have searched me Lord, and you know me. (v1-6) The Lord is omniscient. He knows far more than we know of ourselves. He knows David’s thoughts before they are formed, the actions before they are put into motion and his words before they reach the tip of his tongue. The Lord, your creator, knows you perfectly.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? (v7-12) Omnipresent. There is no hiding; there is no escaping. From the heavens to the depths, the dark to the light, the East from the West even there Your hand will guide me. (v10) Even the darkness in your life is light to him.
For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. (v 13-18) Omnipotent. He is the creator. The Hebrew word for the verb “created” in this verse is the same as in Genesis. He is the One who has ordained the span of your life before you were born. He knows us so well because He made us. We were made in His likeness. Our bodies were made by God, in the image of God and, for now, that is where we encounter God. He created us, He knit us, and He breathed us (Gen 2:7).
David’s prayer reveals that being KNOWN and LOVED is the best combination- one without the other will fall short. This passage of prayer ends with David's plea to be examined by God. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (v23-24) It is no light matter to be examined by God. It may feel threatening if you dwell in shame. The enemy thrives when we dwell in our shame. When you carry your shame your first reaction is to hide. To run. To cover-up. We can’t outrun God and we can't hide from our Father.
My prayer, ladies, is that when you take up the Word, you read Psalm 139 - not with your shame on the forefront of your mind but with worship because you are fully known and fully loved by your Creator.
